Weighted Objects

There are several weighted objects on the market to help people with special needs. These objects include:

·         weighted lap pads- helps calm when needing to be still or concentrate while sitting

·          blankets - helps calm and soothe while one is sleeping or sitting (swaddle or lay across). It can also be used for heavy work.

·          neck wraps- helps calm when needing to be still or concentrate while sitting

·          vests - helps calm and soothe when one is active (It is only to be worn for small amounts of time throughout the day- talk to therapist about time limits).

·         animals - helps calm and soothe when one is sleeping, sitting, or on the go. It works great for heavy work activities too.

Weighted objects are affective because they give a person deep pressure to help calm and organize the mind. They have been known to ease anxiety, increase concentration, help with sleeping, and decrease stimming behaviors.
They have helped people with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, and Developmental Delays.

Both of my children have benefited from weighted objects. The weighted blanket has helped with sleeping through the night and easing anxiety during travel. The lap pad has calmed my son down when sitting in a chair. Also, the weighted animal has worked out great to do heavy work for their sensory diets.

Weighted Objects have different affects on different people. The person with special needs has to try them to see what works best. If one doesn’t work, try another. You also might have to change how it is used. For example: my son does not like the weighted blanket covering his whole body. He likes it folded and laid across his chest.

Sensory Goods and Fun and Function sell great weighted objects. I highly recommend both companies.
